The Builders' School

Our Social Studies program provides for collaborative work and interaction among peers and adults. Children engage in a variety of small group and whole class activities which serve as concrete venue for children to practice democracy and responsible action. They learn group skills in brainstorming, planning, group sharing, critiquing and taking action while doing their inquiry projects.

 

We encourage children to pursue their own questions, investigate and construct meaning about the world around them. We adapt an Inquiry and project based learning as a way for children to inquire and engage in these pursuits. Children engage in guided research, fieldwork and presentations to share what they have learned. While engaged in their own learning children are able to do integrative thinking,  applying language and reading skills from their English and Filipino subjects. They are able to practice math skills in organization and data representation as they gather and make sense of data or information gathered. 

 

The Builders’ School Social Studies uses the conceptual approach to planning our inquiry learning units.  We draw from Social Science concepts to provide focus and organize our investigations.  Examples of concepts are:

These key concepts are used to guide our planning of weekly lessons and inquiry projects so that we tackle content knowledge, build on what children know and help them see connections among prior and new ideas.

We are able to do this through well meaning discussions and activities during our  Project Period and stand alone Social Studies. We also make them aware of how these concepts and ideas are connected to what we learn in Science and Literature
